Removing The Leg Castings

  • Support the Central Hydraulic Hub of the dolly with the legs clear.

  • Using the steering column in the wheel hub, ensure that the dolly is in crab mode, and all 4 wheels are freely rotating.

  • If the dolly is in 2-wheel mode, then rotate the wheels until the gear change lever pictured disengages allowing 4-wheel steer.

  • The rotation of the wheels is governed by a chain connecting all four legs and there gears visible in this picture.

  • Rotate the chain until you are able to identify the connecting link.

  • The link has a retaining clip, plate and two-pinned plate.

  • Once the clip and plate are removed then the pinned plate is relatively easy to remove.

  • To remove the leg casting, you will need to remove the nut and its retaining castelated safety washer on the top of the leg casting as pictured.

  • Flatten out the safety washer with a punch and hammer, then undo the locking nut.

  • It is preferable to have the correct SKF spanners for these locking nuts.

  • At this stage, the leg casting is also retained by the position pin and lever.

  • Note 1: Once the central pin is removed there is nothing securing the gears inside the casting.

  • With a punch protected with tape, or piece of nylon bar, drive the central pin joining the two leg castings together.

  • Note 2: The central pin can sometimes be corroded and unwilling to come out. In extreme cases, it may be worth while to remove the entire leg assembly from the hydraulic hub and remove it with a press, as hitting it too hard with a hammer could break the casting.

  • Once the central pin is removed, the casting and gears can be secured/held with one hand.

  • With the other hand depress the leg position pedal (rear Right of picture), and the assembly should come away.

  • Turn over the casting so no gears fall out and put the pieces on the bech or in a tray, until you are ready to dismantle them.

  • What lies beneath? The underside of the main leg castings. Two with gear change mechanism.

  • The gears at the rear of the picture are secured by the central pin, and become completely free following its removal. The two with gear change on the right of picture comprise of 4 parts.

  • Once the main leg castings are removed, then you can undo the bolts that secure the secondary leg castings to the main hydraulic hub.

  • It's adviseable to retain the nuts, bolts and parts from each section in a labelled bag.
